PICKLE MAKING ACTIVITY: RAISING AWARENESS FOR FOOD PRESERVATION
Project-based learning is a powerful instructional method for weaving various concepts and skills in the curriculum using real life experiences. It has always been created, keeping in mind the children’s endless curiosity and imagination and makes children realize that they are important and active contributors to their learning. In this context, the theme 'food preservation' was recently introduced to the Presidians of Dwarka 22 to sensitize them about stopping food wastage. Methods to preserve food were explored by the students to prevent spoilage and provide long shelf life to the food.
To understand this better, the young students of grade 5 made lemon pickle as one of the methods of food preservation. Children were very keen about the activity and conducted a market survey to get to know the original cost of lemons and other ingredients of lemon pickle. They made a questionnaire to hold interview with the elders in their family or their neighbours about the traditional methods of making the pickles. The best part was that every child was completely involved in that process through active discussions, observations, feedbacks and their reflections made this activity a great learning.

The open environment and gathering of students gave way to the purpose for which this event was organized. Senior students shared the significance of this day and brought our attention to this year’s theme given by UN - 'not a target'. They talked about the conflicts taking a massive toll on people’s lives around the world. Trapped in wars, how millions of civilians are forced to hide or run for their lives. Children are taken out of schools, families are displaced from their homes and communities are torn apart. Our students proposed a plan to resolve the problems within the community by creating awareness and spreading a message of love respect and tolerance. A student recited a meaningful self-composed poem, which awakened the audience to the conditions prevailing in the world. It stirred emotions and left us with deep reflections into the plight of the people around us, reminding us of our duties of being a human.
