OUR 'HANDS ON' LEARNERS BECOME ADEPT IN BLANCHING VEGETABLES
“We must see, hear, smell, touch and yes, taste to form the kinds of complex association that makes up true understanding. We humans are direct ‘hands on’ learners.” -Laura Grace Weldon
Keeping this thought in mind, the young Presidians of grade 5 were given hands on experience to blanch vegetables as a part of PBL theme ‘Food Preservation’. The students were explained the meaning of blanching as a cooking process wherein a food item, usually a vegetable or fruit, is scalded in boiling water, removed after a timed interval, and finally plunged into iced water or placed under cold running water to halt the cooking process and mellow down the growth of microorganisms. The students did the process with peas and followed the steps accordingly. A thorough discussion followed after the process, where they brainstormed about the benefits of blanching.
RECAPITULATING MATHEMATICAL CONCEPTS THROUGH TAMBOLA ACTIVITY
“Pure mathematics is, in it's way, the poetry of logical ideas.” -Albert Einstein.
Mathematics provides us with an ability to reason, identify patterns and solve problems through the application of logic. Math games and activities can give the child’s learning, a boost in many ways and help him engage with numbers from a young age. With the same purpose, our grade 2 facilitators organized a ‘Mathematical Tambola’ game for students where the numbers were called out in an inconsistent way to make them apply logical inferences and guess the number using mental math. Students applied their understanding of various concepts like tens-ones, addition, subtraction, odd-even, etc. For instance, number 57 was called out as ‘5 tens and 7 ones’. This fun filled game helped students to recapitulate various mathematical concepts and develop their problem-solving skills.

ASTRONOMY SESSION: BUILDING COMETS & EXPLORING CELESTIAL SYSTEM
Astronomy compels the soul to look upwards and leads us from this world to another.
We recently conducted an astronomy session where various activities were hosted to allow the Presidians to explore the world of astronomy. The session got the students excited as it gave an understanding about space rocks and their role in the evolution of solar system & life in it. Packed with full zeal, they made their own comet from various materials. Later, they were educated about the concept of coordinates in our celestial system and identifying reference techniques to locate objects in space. They were also thrilled to create their own celestial grid and a sky map. This enriching session increased the curiosity in these young astronomers to explore further about space.

ENJOYING A TELEPHONE MAKING ACTIVITY UNDER THEME 'COMMUNICATION'
Learning is not about mere memorization of concepts, it is about a learner’s connection to the environment and how they implement their knowledge.
To make our Presidians of grade 3 feel connected to the theme ’Communication’, we organised an exciting ‘telephone making activity’. In this activity they created a telephone using plastic glasses and thread. For creating a telephone they had to punch holes in the bottom of the glasses followed by inserting the thread through the holes and knotting them. They experienced the sound waves when they pulled the string straight and tried to hear their friends’ sound from one end of the glass to another. It was truly an enriching experience for them as they learnt about the history of communication through telephone. They created their telephones enthusiastically and enjoyed talking to their friends and teachers through it.

They labeled various body parts in English and Hindi one by one to inculcate bilingualism. The Presidians also relished different juices to know more about the sense of taste and discussed how to ensure cleanliness. Developing their understanding about the special body parts associated to all the senses, the activity showcased our young leaders’ exemplary coordination and zeal to learn.
